Some see the ocean as a barrier. Dstelecom sees it as the next frontier for connectivity. The Portuguese company is paving the way for a new paradigm in communications, featuring hybrid solutions that combine terrestrial and satellite connections, ensuring stable connectivity even in the most demanding conditions, such as those found on the open sea.
During REPMUS, one of the largest international maritime technology experimentation exercises, held in Tróia and Sesimbra, dstelecom put this innovative approach to the test in partnership with Lacuna Space and in collaboration with the Portuguese Navy, through the Hydrographic Institute. The test used LoRa (Long Range) technology, a wireless communication system that allows data to be exchanged over long distances with low energy consumption, ideal for environments where reliability and efficiency are crucial.
This was dstelecom's third consecutive participation in REPMUS, following previous collaborations dedicated to the sensorisation of submarine cables. The trial is part of the New Space Portugal project, funded by the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), and addresses one of today's greatest technological challenges: ensuring reliable communications in remote areas, in this case the sea, where interconnection between ships, coastal infrastructure and satellites is vital for safety, environmental monitoring and logistical operations.
The commitment to this front demonstrates dstelecom's capacity for cooperation and technological innovation, which has been consolidating its role not only as a network operator but also as a strategic partner in the national digital ecosystem. The company has been able to position itself at the frontier between terrestrial and space communications, in a line where the Portuguese sea can become a living laboratory for the next generation of connectivity.
More than a technical exercise, this initiative reflects dstelecom's DNA of bringing connectivity where it is most challenging, expanding the reach of digital transformation to sectors traditionally removed from high-capacity networks. In doing so, it also hopes to contribute to establishing Portugal as a technological benchmark in the fields of defence, security and space.
