Braga-based company invests in network expansion and brings high-speed internet to over 1,300 new homes in the ‘Portuguese capital of olive oil’

Dstelecom, a DST Group company based in Braga, has announced the expansion of its fiber optic network in the municipality of Vila Flor, in the district of Bragança, which will be completed by the end of the first quarter of the year. The initiative aims to improve high-speed internet access in a predominantly rural region known as the ‘Portuguese capital of olive oil’.

Six villages to have fiber optics for the first time

According to the company, the villages of Assares, Candoso, Carvalho de Egas, Lodões, Roios and Sampaio will have fiber optic infrastructure for the first time. At the same time, the capacity of the existing network in Vila Flor and Nabo will be reinforced, improving the quality and stability of the service.

With this investment, around 1,300 new homes will be covered by the network, allowing the municipality to benefit from fast and stable internet connections, comparable to those available in large urban centres.

Coverage reaches 80% of the municipal territory

In total, dstelecom will now provide coverage to around 5,200 homes, representing approximately 80% of the municipal territory of Vila Flor. The company emphasises that this expansion contributes to reducing regional disparities and promoting territorial cohesion through equitable access to digital networks.

Digital equality as a factor for social cohesion

Quoted in a press release, dstelecom CEO Ricardo Salgado emphasises that ‘bringing connectivity to those who do not yet have it is the true impact of our mission,’ adding that equal access to quality internet is now crucial for social, economic and territorial development.

Freedom of choice between operators

dstelecom’s infrastructure operates on an open network basis, allowing residents to choose between the main telecommunications operators operating in Portugal. This flexibility makes it possible to tailor services to the needs of each user, while promoting greater price competitiveness.

A ‘digital highway’ serving the country

Founded in 2008, dstelecom was created with the mission of eliminating geographical barriers and ensuring that all Portuguese people, from the coast to the interior, have access to the most modern communications networks. Currently, its ‘digital highway’ extends across 150 municipalities, covering almost one million homes, serving as the basis for the services offered by the main national telecommunications operators.
