A further 9,500 homes will be brought within the coverage of the dstelecom network in seven municipalities in the region, bringing the total number of homes covered to over 46,000.
dstelecom continues to invest in the expansion of its fiber optic network in the interior of the country. By the end of 2026, the company plans to extend coverage to seven municipalities in Trás-os-Montes, bringing its infrastructure to a further 9,500 homes and widening access to state-of-the-art connectivity.
Bragança, Macedo de Cavaleiros, Mirandela, Mogadouro, Vila Flor, Vila Real and Vinhais are the municipalities covered by this new phase of expansion, which combines extending the network to new areas with improving coverage in areas where the infrastructure is already in place.
With this development, dstelecom’s open, multi-operator network will now cover more than 46,000 homes in the region, enabling more communities to access broadband services via the operators using the infrastructure.
A network that is increasingly close to local communities
The expansion is making it possible to reach areas that did not previously have fiber optic coverage, such as Zoio, in Bragança, and Agrochão, Celas, Ervedosa and Penhas Juntas, in Vinhais. In Macedo de Cavaleiros, the network will be extended to areas such as Lamalonga, Espadanedo and Vilarinho de Agrochão.
The expansion will also have a significant impact on other municipalities. In Mirandela, more than 4,800 new homes are set to be connected, whilst Vila Flor will see more than 1,300 and Macedo de Cavaleiros more than 1,200. In the latter municipality, the expansion will bring fiber optic coverage to 98%, a figure also forecast for Vila Flor.
In Mogadouro, the works in the parish of Castelo Branco will bring a further 300 homes within the network’s coverage. In Vila Real, more than 400 homes will be covered by this phase of expansion, which also includes further network upgrades by the end of the year.
In the municipality of Vinhais, the extension of the infrastructure to new areas and the enhancement of existing coverage will bring the total number of homes covered to over 5,200. In Bragança, the network will now cover around 1,400 homes in the parish of Zoio.
Connectivity to create opportunities
More than simply extending geographical coverage, the expansion of the network helps to bring inland areas closer to the opportunities offered by access to digital connectivity. The availability of telecommunications infrastructure is a key factor for communities, businesses and the development of local economies.
“Trás-os-Montes is a region we value and where we want to continue making a difference. Bringing fiber optic broadband to more households also means bringing inland areas closer to the same opportunities available in major urban centres, creating better conditions for living, working, studying and investing,” said Ricardo Salgado, chief executive of dstelecom.
Through its open, multi-operator network model, dstelecom makes its infrastructure available to the leading telecoms operators in Portugal, helping to expand the range of connectivity services across the country.
